Using bananas and the small clickers used to train puppies, a team in Tanzania from the Belgian NGO Apopo is teaching dozens of African giant pouched rats to sniff out landmines. Apopo has already had great success reclaiming millions of square metres of land in Angola and Mozambique – its rats can each search 200 square metres of land in just 20 minutes. Rat training manager Abdullah Mchomvu explains how the programme works.
